My London Marathon Journey: Lessons Learned and Future Goals

Reflecting on My First Marathon: What I would Do Differently Next Time

Participating in the London Marathon was an exhilarating and transformative experience. Reflecting on the race, there are a couple of things that I would do differently to make my next marathon even more enjoyable and successful.

First, I would focus on pacing myself better in the early miles. The excitement and adrenaline of the start led me to push too hard, and I felt the consequences later in the race.

Secondly, I would prioritise more strength training in my preparation. While my cardiovascular endurance was acceptable, stronger muscles could have helped me allowed me to maintain my form and reduce fatigue.

The Why Behind Running the London Marathon

Running a Marathon was always on my bucket list for many years but if you know me, you will know that I am no endurance athlete. I am built more like a boxer than a runner! This was absolutely the hardest challenge I have ever done but I strangely loved every of it!Never in a million years did I think I would sign up!

I ran the London Marathon for Leukaemia UK which is a charity that supports people diagnosed with Leukaemia. The reason I selected this charity is because my dad was diagnosed with Chronic Leukaemia in 2019, which is a Cancer of the blood.

The illness was dormant until the end of 2022 before the need for medical intervention. As soon as my dad started his Chemotherapy, I signed up to the 2024 London Marathon to channel my energy and to keep focus. The logic was, if he could go through such a treatment process with pure positivity, then I should be able to get through the hard months of training. It worked out that we were both on our respective journeys during the entire 2023through to 2024.

Just before April 2024 my dad was given all clear and entered remissions, and he was able to watch me complete the London Marathon!

It took 06:27 and plenty of blood, sweat and tears but I did it!

Preparation: What Helped Me Get Ready

Training for the London Marathon was a journey of discipline and commitment. Here are a few key elements that helped me prepare:

1. Consistent Training Plan: Following a structured training plan with gradual mileage increases helped build my endurance without risking injury.

2. Long Runs: Incorporating weekly long runs allowed me to get comfortable with the marathon distance and build mental toughness.

3. Nutrition: Paying attention to my diet, especially carb-loading before long runs and race day, ensured I had the energy to sustain my effort. Sporting gels were my saviour during weekly long runs!

4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated throughout my training and during the race helped prevent cramps and fatigue.

Recovery: What Helped Me Bounce Back

Recovery is just as important as preparation, and a few key practices helped me recover effectively after the marathon:

1. Stretching and Foam Rolling: Incorporating gentle stretching and foam rolling into my routine helped alleviate muscle soreness and improve flexibility.

2. Rest and Sleep: Prioritising rest and getting plenty of sleep allowed my body to repair and rebuild after the race.

3. Hydration and Nutrition: Continuing to stay hydrated and consuming nutrient-rich foods aided in the recovery process.

4. Active Recovery: Light activities like walking and gentle stretching helped keep my muscles loose and promote circulation.

Race Day Surprise: The Biggest Unexpected Moment

One of the biggest surprises on race day was the sheer magnitude of the support from spectators. I had heard about the incredible atmosphere but experiencing it firsthand was something else entirely. The streets were lined with cheering crowds, bands playing uplifting music, and people holding encouraging signs. The energy from the spectators was a powerful motivator and helped me push through the toughest moments of the race. Additionally, seeing familiar faces among the crowd – friends and family who had come to support me – was a heartwarming and unexpected boost that made the experience even more special.
