Frequently Asked Questions About vO2 Max Testing

What To Know Before Having a VO2 Max Test

VO2 max is a measure of how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise. It is widely regarded as one of the best indicators of cardiovascular fitness and endurance performance.

The higher your VO2 max, the better your body’s ability to deliver and utilise oxygen during exercise.

VO2 max is useful for anyone wanting to improve fitness, endurance, health, or performance.

It can help:

  • Measure cardiovascular fitness
  • Identify training zones
  • Track progress over time
  • Improve endurance performance
  • Support weight loss and fat-burning strategies
  • Monitor overall health and longevity

Research has consistently shown that higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with better long-term health outcomes.

VO2 max testing is suitable for:

  • Runners
  • Cyclists
  • Rowers
  • Hyrox athletes
  • Triathletes
  • Team sport athletes
  • Gym enthusiasts
  • Anyone looking to improve their fitness or health

You don’t need to be an elite athlete. Many people use VO2 max testing to establish a baseline and monitor improvements over time.

At Active Health Clinics, we use the VO2 Master system, which measures your oxygen consumption in real time while exercising.

The test involves wearing a lightweight mask whilst exercise intensity gradually increases. The data collected allows us to accurately determine your VO2 max and training zones.

Yes.

We can perform VO2 max testing on a treadmill, making it ideal for runners or anyone wanting to assess their cardiovascular fitness in a running-specific environment.

Yes.

We can perform VO2 max testing using our Wattbike, which provides highly accurate cycling data.

For cyclists who prefer their own setup, we can also use a Bluetooth turbo trainer, allowing you to bring your own bike and complete the test using the equipment you normally ride.

Yes.

VO2 max testing can be performed on a rowing machine, making it ideal for rowers and individuals who prefer rowing as their primary form of exercise.

This allows us to gather data that is specific to your sport and training demands.

Yes.

VO2 max testing using direct gas analysis is considered the gold standard for measuring aerobic fitness.

By using the VO2 Master system, we are able to collect real-time respiratory data and provide accurate, objective results.

The exercise test itself typically takes between 8 and 15 minutes.

However, we also carry out pre-test preparation, equipment setup, and a review of your results, so you should allow approximately 60 minutes for the full appointment.

Your results can provide valuable insights into:

  • Current fitness levels
  • Aerobic capacity
  • Training zones
  • Heart rate zones
  • Exercise efficiency
  • Areas for improvement

Following the test, we’ll explain your results in plain English and help you understand how to apply them to your training, whether your goal is improved performance, better fitness, weight management, or long-term health.

Absolutely.

One of the biggest benefits of VO2 max testing is identifying your personalised training zones. This allows you to train at the correct intensity rather than relying on guesswork.

Many athletes find that training based on objective data helps them improve performance more efficiently.

Yes.

VO2 max testing can help identify your training zones and exercise intensities, allowing you to better understand how your body responds to exercise.

Combined with appropriate nutrition and training, this information can help support long-term weight management and fitness goals.

Most people benefit from retesting every 12-24  weeks, depending on their goals.

Regular testing allows you to track progress, evaluate whether your training is working, and make adjustments based on objective data.

Active Health Clinics offers VO2 max testing in Maidenhead using the VO2 Master system.

Testing can be performed on a treadmill, Wattbike, rowing machine, or on your own bike using our Bluetooth turbo trainer.

Whether you’re training for a race, preparing for a Hyrox event, improving your cycling performance, or simply looking to better understand your fitness, VO2 max testing provides accurate and actionable data to guide your training.

At Active Health Clinics in Maidenhead, we combine advanced testing technology with expert coaching and clinical expertise.

Using the VO2 Master system, we can assess your fitness on a treadmill, Wattbike, rowing machine, or even your own bike using our Bluetooth turbo trainer.

Unlike many testing services that simply provide a report, we help you understand what the results mean and how to apply them to your training, performance, health, and long-term fitness goals.

VO2 max testing at Active Health Clinics is carried out by Nick Riding, our Accredited Strength & Conditioning Coach and performance specialist.

Nick works with everyone from individuals looking to improve their health and fitness through to endurance athletes seeking to optimise performance. As well as conducting the test itself, he helps you understand what the results mean and how they can be applied to your training.

Rather than simply providing a VO2 max score, Nick can help identify appropriate training zones, highlight areas for improvement, and guide you on the most effective next steps to achieve your goals.

Many clinics stop at providing a report. We believe the real value comes from understanding what the numbers mean.

After your test, Nick Riding, our Strength & Conditioning Coach, will talk you through your results, explain your training zones, and discuss how you can use the information to improve your fitness, performance, or health.

Our aim is to provide actionable advice, not just data.

Yes.

VO2 max is considered one of the strongest indicators of cardiovascular fitness and overall health. Research has consistently shown that people with higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness tend to live longer and have a lower risk of developing a range of chronic health conditions.

While VO2 max is often associated with endurance athletes, it is equally relevant for anyone looking to improve their health, energy levels, resilience, and quality of life. In fact, many health professionals now view VO2 max as one of the most important markers of long-term health and healthy ageing.

The good news is that VO2 max can be improved through appropriate training, making it a useful measure not only of current fitness, but also of future health potential.

During the test your practitioner will begin by discussing your current training and what you’re looking to achieve by having a VO2 Max test. They’ll take some key measurements such as height and weight to calibrate our testing equipment.

Once everything is ready and you’ve been fitted with the VO2 Max Master mask your test will begin. This can take place using our treadmill for runners or our wattbike for cyclists. During the test the intensity of the exercise will gradually increase until you reach your maximum capacity. This usually takes between 10 – 15 minutes of intense exercise.

Once you’ve finished the test and cooled down, your results will be immediately available. Of which your practitioner will talk you through the results, what they mean, and offer guidance on how to optimise your training to improve your results. You’ll also receive a full report to take your results home.

Avoid strenuous exercise the day before your test, and refrain from eating, smoking, or consuming caffeine for at least 3 hours prior. Wear comfortable exercise clothing and bring a water bottle.
We recommend coming in your usual running or riding attire for your test. The only item we strongly suggest you consider wearing are running or cycling shorts so we can easily attach the sensor that goes around your thigh.
